Mainstreaming Big Data

Dateline: July 18, 2014

Welcome to our Friday WRAP – one thought-provoking idea to think about over the weekend.

This week’s idea comes from Sloan Management Review’s recent blog, Big Data Fatigue, by Randy Bean, CEO and managing partner of NewVantage Partners, a data and analytics executive management advisory firm.

The blog suggests there are three reasons why big data is part of the mainstream now:

1. Big Data is about all data, not just social media, unstructured or massive data….integrating and analyzing data from existing data sources was (for mainstream firms) their greatest priority.

2.  Big Data will change the time and cost equation for all data applications…Big data is becoming an integral part of the mainstream for large corporations as they come to understand that they can, for the first time, make data of any kind available to business analysts in a timely and cost-effective fashion.

3.  Big Data is a term that captures the zeitgeist…Big Data is a term that has caught on…and will drive business value for many years to come.

Has Big Data become part of your mainstream business processes or is it still a project or ‘add on’ to mainstream work?  What can you do to migrate your business to this ‘new mainstream’?

That’s a WRAP! Have a nice weekend!
