Security Safeguard Expectations from our Vendors

Dateline: May 11, 2018

Welcome to our Friday WRAP – one thought-provoking idea to think about over the weekend.

We all know that cybersecurity is our job, but as we move more and more of our work to apps, the cloud, and other external hosts, what cybersecurity can we expect these vendors to provide? Recently, The Conversation published an article from Indiana University Associate Professor Scott Shackelford titled “How Companies Can Stay Ahead of the Cybersecurity Curve.”  This article summarizes some of Professor Shackelford’s research on the government’s policies and activities to set guidelines for cybersecurity including the NIST framework, the State of California’s and New York’s new cybersecurity and data privacy laws, and the FTC’s order for Wyndham Hotel Group to create a comprehensive cybersecurity policy.  He suggests,

Companies will need to move away from reactive, defensive approaches to cybersecurity and toward more actively managing risk. That includes a range of technological and administrative shifts, some with financial costs.

What is the risk your company faces? How might the Federal or State Government react to a breach at your business?  How can you get ahead of that now?

That’s a WRAP!  Have a great weekend!
