New EU Data Protection Requirements Might Mean Big Changes

Dateline: March 3, 2017

Welcome to our Friday WRAP – one thought-provoking idea to think about over the weekend.

Have you given any thought to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), set to start in about 18 months?  It will give regulators the ability to fine companies for non-compliance.  Companies who do not prepare to govern their data appropriately do so at their own peril.  Recently CIO.com published an article calling for data protection officers.  In it, they quoted  Steve Durbin, managing director of the Information Security Forum (ISF), a global, independent information security body that focuses on cyber security and information risk management.

The GDPR is putting data protection practices at the forefront of business agendas worldwide,” Durbin said in a statement earlier this month. “Its scope is unmatched by any other international law, and we estimate that more than 98 percent of ISF members will be affected by its requirements because they process the personal data of EU residents, or are based in the EU.

How will your company prepare for the new data protection rules in the EU?  Do you have a data protection officer?

That’s a WRAP!  Have a nice weekend!
