IT Leaders and IT Managers

Dateline: August 14, 2015

Welcome to our Friday WRAP – one thought-provoking idea to think about over the weekend.

Leaders and managers – both are critical roles for successful IT organizations.  In my leadership development programs a must read is business guru John Kotter’s classic HBR article on the topic.  But more recently, I noticed a popular blogpost on LinkedIn’s Pulse site written by serial entrepreneur James Caan.  In his post, “Management vs Leadership. What’s the Difference?” he suggests,

For me, the difference between managers and leaders manifests in their actions. Managers administrate, leaders innovate. Manager’s delegate, leaders inspire and managers implement, whilst leaders direct.

Regardless of whether you are a leader,  a manager or both, your IT organization needs both.

How do you divide up the leadership and management activities in your organization?  Who provides leadership?  Who provides management?

That’s a WRAP!  Have a great weekend!
