Intuition vs Analytics

Dateline: August 26, 2016

Welcome to our Friday WRAP – one thought-provoking idea to think about over the weekend.

Trusting analytics results over intuition can be big hurdle for seasoned managers.  With years, perhaps decades, of experience and honing skills to make tough decisions, it’s a big leap for many to stop trusting their intuition and start trusting recommendations from the data. After all, data can be wrong, analysis can be wrong, or the interpretation of the results can be wrong.

In an article published at Information Week, Tim Young, senior analyst in Statistics & Analytics, Information Technology, at Southwestern Illinois College, suggested,

The biggest obstacle I see that disconnects vision from execution is that people tend to trust their gut [when it comes to running] their business, regardless of what the data says. If the data supports intuition, great. If not, well, most people will go with their gut anyway.

How do your managers balance intuition with analytics?  What is the right mix for your organization?

That’s a WRAP!  Have a terrific weekend!
